One of Malta’s most iconic natural attractions is taking steps to protect its fragile ecosystem and elevate the visitor experience. As of May 1, a new booking system is now in place for access to the Blue Lagoon, a move spearheaded by the Malta Tourism Authority in cooperation with the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Tourism, among other national authorities.

The system, developed as part of a comprehensive two-year sustainability plan known as Team Blue Lagoon, is designed to drastically curb overcrowding. In 2024, the site saw as many as 12,000 people during peak summer days. Under the new rules, entry will be capped at 4,000 individuals at a time, representing a two-thirds reduction in daily visitation.

“Book, Protect, Enjoy” is the motto behind the initiative, which aims to balance the popularity of the Blue Lagoon with its long-term conservation. The multi-agency task force behind the program includes the Ministries for Gozo and Planning, Transport Malta, the Environment and Resources Authority, the Malta Police Force, LESA and the Civil Protection Department.

Travelers visiting in 2025 will also notice several infrastructure and safety upgrades. Enhancements include:

  • Safer, expanded swimming zones
  • Upgraded waste management
  • Additional sanitation facilities
  • Stronger enforcement throughout

The new reservation system is free and accessible through bluelagooncomino.mt. Visitors, whether arriving by private boat or commercial vessel, must pre-book a time slot before heading to the lagoon. Three timeframes are offered daily:

  • 08:00 to 13:00
  • 13:30 to 17:30
  • 18:00 to 22:00

Upon booking, each guest receives a QR code and a wristband, both of which are required for entry and will be checked by officials stationed at various land and sea access points. Additional staff will be deployed during the system’s rollout phase to help guests navigate the new process.

This milestone initiative underscores Malta’s broader commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental preservation. By managing crowds and investing in conservation efforts, the country aims to ensure that the Blue Lagoon’s turquoise waters and overall natural beauty remain unspoiled for future generations.
